What? Her Story
Who? Co-created by Jen Richards and Laura Zak. Starring: Jen Richards, Laura Zak, Angelica Ross, Christian Ochoa, Fawzia Mirza, Caroline Whitney Smith and Josh Wingate.
Why Should I Watch? How can I describe Her Story? A few things come to mind: groundbreaking, hilarious, sexy, genuine, beautiful and so much more. The Emmy-nominated series was the first ever indie series to be nominated in the Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series category. If that weren't impressive enough, Her Story is an industry-first for starring two trans women in leading roles. Following the lives of Violet (Richards) and Paige (Ross) two trans women living in LA who are down on their luck when it comes to dating, but after chance encounters, things seem to be looking up for them.
The web series doesn't shy away from acknowledging the negative way trans men and women have been portrayed in the media. I won't lie and say that there aren't moments of transphobia, because there are, but it's so important to see those situations and fix them, not by violence or arguing but by educating. If you haven't watched the series yet (shame on you!), you might find yourself feeling uncomfortable in certain situations but what Her Story so beautifully captures, is that it's okay to be curious. We find that in Allie (Zak) a reporter who is looking to learn more about trans women and their lifestyle for an upcoming assignment. She asks the questions people are afraid to ask and instead finds herself being educated and that is so important. That pivotal scene in the first episode speaks loads and I can't emphasize that enough.
The series prides itself on featuring predominately LGBTQ women on and off-screen, sending an important message to the community. Their voices, our voices, deserves to be heard just as much as anyone else's. I'm going to cut myself off before I go into more of a tangent of how much I think this series is going to change the world by leaving you with this: If you haven't seen this series go into it with an open mind and a willingness to learn. If you have, watch it again and share it. In conclusion, it's just not just about his tory, it's about Her Story too.
